The PFA’s million pound cheque handover to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital was a memorable occasion topped off by a personal acknowledgement from the Prime Minister.
Gordon Brown said of the union’s Centenary fund-raising efforts: “I would like to congratulate the PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor, the chairman, members and supporters of the PFA for their magnificent achievement of raising £1m for the Manchester hospital.
“The PFA continues to do a lot of excellent work, and not just for football, but for Community projects throughout the country.
“This fund-raising effort, in such difficult economic climes, shows this country at its very best.”
Gordon Taylor added: “I would like to congratulate everybody who contributed to our One Goal One Million campaign.
“We are very proud of the fact that we have been able to make a difference to the children that will use the new hospital and in particular the rehabilitation unit. Having seen the unit I am delighted that the PFA was able to give their support to such a fantastic hospital.”
Maurice Watkins, Chairman of The New Children’s Hospital Appeal added: “We are extremely grateful to Gordon Taylor and the members of the PFA who very kindly chose to support our Appeal.
“One million pounds is a fantastic amount that will go towards providing state of the art equipment in the rehabilitation unit.”
The New Children’s Hospital Appeal has been focusing on raising money to provide additional and up-to date equipment for diagnosis and treatment as well as a place for parents to stay on or close to their child’s ward during treatment.
The Appeal has £2 million left to raise to ensure that they hit the £20 million target.
