PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor has given his whole-hearted support to the union members who named Ryan Giggs as their Players’ Player of the Year.
The choice of
Manchester United veteran Ryan as player of the year has been questioned in certain quarters. Wrongly so.
I liked a comment on the Manchester United official website after the country’s most decorated professional had finally been crowned the man of the season...
‘The only surprise about
Ryan Giggs being named
PFA Players’ Player of the Year in April 2009 was that it had taken so long for him to win the prestigious award’.
Now he’s got it, and justifiably so after a great season and a wonderful career which shows no signs of ebbing away.
Gordon Taylor says: “As far as I am concerned Ryan Giggs was a worthy winner, and I can’t think of any footballer in the country who would deny him that trophy in his cabinet.
“He is a top professional in every respect, a role model to be looked up to, and we are proud to honour him as our Players’ Player of the Year.”
Few would argue with that; certainly not teammate and fellow nominee Edwin Van Der Sar who also praises his Manchester United pal for breaking the 800 appearance record.
"It would be hard to beat that record," said the veteran Dutchman, who has made more than 650 club appearances during his career.
"There are so many changes now with transfers and everything else and Ryan started out early. You will not see anything like that in future. And the thing is he is still going strong. It is as though he was only 31.
"It is a joy to see how he trains as well as plays. How he controls the ball, how he sees a pass and the runs he makes.
"He can read a game and adjust the way we play. He shows such dedication every day and sets the example for everyone."
