No matter where you are in the world the PFA may be able to help. Spencer Prior is a case in point.

The former central defender who plied his trade with Southend, Norwich, Leicester, Derby, Manchester City and Cardiff now lives in Australia, but when he went on a coaching course down under his first call was to the PFA in Manchester.

Givemefootball’s Lawrie Madden caught up with him to find out more.

Q: How did you go about getting a grant from the PFA?

A: Simple, contacted the Manchester office, who passed me the correct contact, and they just asked me what I was studying, how much the course cost, dates, and told me when I’ve completed the course they would cover some of the costs.

Q: How did you find it?

A: Really easy. There aren’t 50 different application forms to go through. Just keep your receipts, don’t take the micky, and hand them over at the completion of your course.

Q: So you’ve completed your ‘A’ licence – how are you using the qualifications?

A: I’m assistant manager at Manly United in the NSW Premier League which is the next level down from the A League here in Australia.

Football here is growing really fast, and with the success of the Socceroos it will continue to get bigger and stronger. While here I hope to be part of passing on my playing experience to the future talent in Australia.

Q: How has coaching abroad helped you?

A: I’m always looking to learn as a football coach, and it’s more important now than ever to have your coaching qualifications to fall back on. I hope to coach at the highest level one day, and will go on to study for a pro diploma as there are always new experiences for us to learn as coaches

Q: Any advice for other former and current players in using the PFA?

A: Don’t leave it too late to start planning your future after football. The PFA are there to help you, and there are real benefits not just for current players, but anyone who has been a member of the PFA.
