The good news is – United have still got Wayne

Gordon Taylor reckons Rooney would have been a bigger loss than Ronaldo

PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor has been away with the England squad in Kazakhstan, and was at Wembley on Wednesday night to see them chalk up World Cup win number seven out of seven.

He has also witnessed, at first hand, the growth in stature of one of the most important players in both the England squad and the Manchester United first team....Wayne Rooney.

“Wayne has been absolutely fantastic over the last year or so for England, just as he has been for United,” comments Gordon.

“Just as the England team has developed and matured under Fabio Capello, so has Wayne and it was fantastic to see him finish the season with yet another international goal against Andorra.”

Of course, all the talk over the last 48 hours has been the pending departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has also been a key to United’s magical success in recent years.

But, if push came to shove, and the question was asked of United fans – if it came down to a choice of keeping either Rooney or Ronaldo, who would get your vote?

Gordon knows who he would keep, and says: “It’s a hypothetical question and a personal choice, but I would rather lose Ronaldo than Rooney.

“That’s no disrespect to Cristiano, in any way, because he has been fantastic for Manchester United, and for the Premier League in general.

“But I just feel that Wayne is fundamental to the future of club and country, and you would fight tooth and nail to keep him if a club like Real Madrid came knocking.

“He is getting better and stronger with every season and his development is a reflection of the improvement and growth of the national team in general under Capello.

“I have seen at first hand the increase in discipline and technical levels, and you can’t fail to be impressed with the professional standards the national coach has set – and that the players have followed.

“We have every right to be proud of our national team’s achievements over the last year or so; and every reason to be supremely optimistic about the future.”
