Wayne Entwistle had a long and distinguished career as a player from 1974 through to 1990. He started at Bury as an apprentice and played under managers such as Dave Bassett, Jimmy Adamson and Alan Ball.

When the centre forward finished his career he started his own business and turned to the PFA when he decided on a change of career. Givemefootball’s Lawrie Madden caught up with him to find out about the changes in his life.

Q. What help did you go to the PFA for?
A. I was looking to get into the construction industry and a former teammate at Bury told me about the PFA and the help they can provide. I had my own business in catering for 17 years and was looking for a change and went and spoke with the PFA.

Q. What courses did you go on?
A. If you want to work in the construction, demolition or excavation industry then health and safety is paramount so I did my CPCS which you need. Basically it is a card to get on site to do anything from labouring through to site manager.

Q. How much have you used the PFA to help you?
A. They helped me with the costs for the CPCS and also for a forward tipper and dumper course. If you are in excavation and demolition you need it. Since then I have been working for the last nine months doing a variety of jobs from being a labourer to driving a dumper and a tipper.

Q. How important was the grant to you?
A. At the time I was working for the minimum wage and all I would have been able to do is save £40 or £50 a week. The grant was a massive help and moved me forward by a year if I had to save. I have three children of school age so it was a big help.

Q. Would you contact the PFA while playing or when you finish?
A. I would tell young players to do their best in their spare time to get a trade or a skill and look for the PFA for guidance and advice on where and what they want to do. There is a world going on outside of football and there are skilled guys out their.
