Andy Goram was born on April 13th, 1964 in Bury and joined Oldham Athletic as a teenager, spending seven years with the ‘Latics’ before moving to Hibernian in 1987. Though relatively short for a keeper, he had superb anticipation, fast reflexes and courage and was a brilliant shot-stopper with magnificent positional sense. He was bought by Rangers in 1991 for £1m and went on to help the club win nine Scottish League titles in a row between 1989 and 1997. He was also instrumental in Rangers' run in the European Cup in 1992-93, as they came to within one match of reaching the final. During that 1992-1993 season, as Rangers enjoyed a remarkable run of 44 games without defeat lasting seven months, Andy played in every game! In all, he kept 107 clean sheets in 258 games for the ‘Gers and in 2001 he was voted their greatest ever goalkeeper by the fans.
After his time with Rangers he had short spells at Motherwell, Notts County, Sheffield United, Manchester United, Elgin City and Coventry City. He ended his career with Queen of the South, with whom he won the Bells Challenge Cup in 2002. He was also an important player for the Scotland national team, winning 43 caps, and featuring in two World Cups. Andy Goram was voted Scottish Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year for 1993.
