He made 98 first team appearances for the Hornets before being signed by Liverpool in 1992 and became a regular in Liverpool's team of the 1990s, winning the League Cup in 1995. With the arrival of American goalkeeper Brad Friedel, David's place at Liverpool became less assured, and in 1999 he was sold to Aston Villa in a £1.7million deal in the summer of 1999 after making 279 appearances for the Reds.
He helped Villa reach the 2000 FA Cup Final, saving penalties against Bolton Wanderers in the semi final, but his stay at Villa Park was shortlived. David moved to West Ham United in the summer of 2001 for £3.5million but returned to the Premier League in January 2004 after West Ham's relegation, signing for Manchester City in a £2m deal. After helping City stay up with two crucial penalty saves towards the end of the season he moved on again when City accepted a bid of £1.2m from Portsmouth at the start of the 2005/6 season. David kept a clean sheet during his first five appearances and put in a series of incredible displays as Portsmouth climbed the Premiership table. His performances led to calls for him to be reinstated to the England squad. David James made his full debut for England in a friendly against Mexico in 1997 as a Liverpool player and has earned 34 caps so far.
