He establishing himself during the 2002/03 season, finishing third in the Ligue One scoring charts with 17 strikes in 34 matches and inspiring Guingamp to seventh place and qualification for the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Drogba then joined Olympique de Marseille in June 2003 and scored against every team he faced in the UEFA Champions League proper and the UEFA Cup until the final loss against Valencia. A further 18 Ligue One goals led to him being crowned the French Player of the Year. At the end of the season he moved to Chelsea for a record fee of £24 million, scoring ten league goals in his first season and twelve in his second as the London club won consecutive Premiership titles.
Didier Drogba is a Côte d'Ivoire international and helped the team qualify for its first ever World Cup Finals, held in Germany in 2006. He scored nine goals in eight qualifying games - statistically one of the best records in international football. He was named 2006 African Footballer of the Year, edging out Samuel Eto'o and captained his country to the 2006 African Cup of Nations final."
