Lawrence Cunningham was born on the 8th March 1956 at Archway, North London, and signed for Arsenal as an apprentice. A wing forward, usually playing on the left side, at his peak he was tremendously popular with deft footwork, speed and poise. He subsequently moved to Leyton Orient F.C. in August 1972, making his professional debut in 1974. In March 1977, he was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £110,000 and, after 86 appearances and 21 goals, he moved to Real Madrid of Spain for £995,000 in June1979. In Madrid he was idolised and was dubbed ‘El Negrito’ as, in his first season with the club, he scored 15 goals and helped them to a League and Cup ‘Double’. In March 1983 he moved on loan to Manchester United F.C. but made just five appearances.

His career was now blighted by injury. He played for Olypique Marseilles, Leicester City, Sporting Gijon, Charleroi and Wimbledon F.C. and finished his career at Rayo Vallecano of Madrid, a Spanish Second Division side whom he helped the club gain promotion. On 15th July 1989, he was killed in a car crash in Madrid. Laurie became the first black player to represent England, being selected by manager Ron Greenwood for the Under 21 side in 1977.

Ivor Linton never made the impact of 'The Three Degrees' but he created a spot of history too
