Michael Carrick was born 28th July 1981 in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear. Until he signed for West Ham United as a junior, he actually played as a centre forward but he has now developed into a classy and composed midfielder, equally at home on the ball as he is trying to win it back or break up attacks. Gifted with two strong feet, he is equally adept at hitting long and short range passes and wide range of passing plus his lateral vision make him a valuable addition to any midfield, especially when producing defence-splitting passes. He made his senior debut for the Hammers in August 1999. When West Ham were relegated from the FA Premier League Michael stayed on at the Boleyn Ground during the Hammers’ first season back in Division One, narrowly missing out on a return to the Premiership in the play-off final.
Seeking to resurrect his Premiership career he moved on to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £2.75m. On 31 July 2006, Manchester United signed him for a £14 million basic fee, potentially rising to £18.6 million. He made his first senior international start in May 2005 during England's tour of the USA, and was included in England's squad for the 2006 World Cup. Michael Carrick showed he could perform on the highest stage with a composed display in the win over Ecuador, where he was assigned the holding role. England won 1-0 and Michael was named Man of the Match.
