Michael Turner arrived at Sunderland from Hull, where, as a centre half, he had played a big part in keeping the Tigers in the Premiership in 2008-09.
Michael came to the Premiership the hard way, starting out at Charlton and spending time at Inter Milan as part of their U19s, a result of an innovative partnership between the clubs.
Spells at Orient, and Brentford followed, before he moved to Hull in 2006.
New Sunderland manager Steve Bruce recognised in Michael the fearless attitude that had characterised his own play, coupled with impressive aerial ability and he signed for the Black Cats at the end of the summer 2009 transfer window.
Already established in the line-up, his imposing presence in the opposition box at set plays has become as much a feature of Sunderland's game as his defensive contributions.
