Peter Shilton was born in Leicester in September 1949 and signed professionally for Leicester City in September 1966, becoming the Foxes' youngest-ever First Division debutant at 16. Peter's shot-stopping solidity, aerial agility, uncanny sense of positioning and absolute command of his area were ultimately responsible for the Foxes creating their best-ever defensive record during 1970-71, when he kept 23 clean sheets! Peter eventually signed for Stoke City for £325,000 but when Stoke dropped into Division Two in 1977, Peter moved on to Nottingham Forest, again for a fee of £325,000. This was followed by five years of almost uninterrupted success in domestic and European competitions as Peter established himself as the country's undisputed number one keeper. Further moves to Southampton and later Derby County saw Peter create various career landmarks: passing Terry Paine's all-time record for the highest number of League appearances with his 825th game in April 1988, and overtaking Bobby Moore's record haul of England caps with his 109th selection against Denmark in June 1989.
All told, Peter played for Leicester City, Stoke City, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Derby County, Plymouth Argyle and Bolton Wanderers, finishing at Leyton Orient, where he achieved a record 1,005 League appearances. In July 1990, Peter finally retired from the international scene with a world record 125 caps to his name.Voted Footballer of the Year in 1978, Peter earned an MBE in 1986 and an OBE in 1991.
