Arsenal defender Bakary Sagna has urged Arsene Wenger to snap up Bosnian captain Emir Spahic, according to the Daily Mail.

The Montpellier defender has been touted as Arsenal’s next signing after impressing in Ligue 1 last season.

Wenger has admitted he would love to bring in another defender to ease their centre-back problems, despite having brought in St Etienne’s Laurent Koscielny.

William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre, Sol Campbell and Philippe Senderos have all left the Emirates this season, leaving them with just Koscielny, Thomas Vermaelen and an injured Johann Djourou.

And Sagna believes the 29-year-old would be a fantastic acquisition for the Gunners, having seen him play in his native France.

Sagna said: “I knew him from last year because he played well and scored some good goals. I used to follow him in French football last year and he is a good player.

“He is the captain of the Bosnian national team so he's a good player. Spahic is a good enough player to play for Arsenal and everyone will welcome him if he does come.

“He is a positive man and a good player and we need that. All good players would be welcomed into the team and will settle into the squad because the atmosphere is great here,” he added.

The one sticking point is Montpellier’s valuation of the Bosnian, which is around the £30 million mark – with Wenger only willing to pay half of that at most.
