Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that Alberto Aquilani was a player that interested him before injury put the Frenchman off.

The Italian is expected to make his Liverpool debut at some point in the game against the Gunners this evening, and Wenger told the Arsenal club website that Aquilani was a player that interested him greatly.

Rafa Benitez signed the midfielder for £20 million this summer, despite his injury-record putting other clubs and managers off the former Serie A side.

"I know him well," said Arsene Wenger.

"We followed him for one or two years but he did not play a lot last year, so he got a little bit out of sight for us and we lost our interest in him."

Tonight might offer Aquilani the chance to show Wenger what he missed if he comes off the bench at the Emirates in the Carling Cup.
