Real Madrid star Mahamdou Diarra has emerged as a shock target for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
The former Lyon midfielder, who moved to Real Madrid in 2006 for £18 million, now looks to on his way out of the Burnebau, with a move to the Emirates appearing extremely likely.
Diarra is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, although missed half of last season due to a serious knee injury.
Diarra has now returned to full fitness, but has found it difficult to hold down a first team place with the emergence of January signing, namesake Lassana Diarra, and Argentine Fernando Gago.
The Spanish press have linked Diarra with a move to the North London side, following the continued speculation that Barcelona’s Yaya Toure could move to Arsenal earlier in the week.
Diarra would be the perfect acquisition for Arsenal, to perform their anchorman role next to Cesc Fabregas, a physical presence that they have lacked since the departure of Gilberto Silva.
Wenger is a long time admirer of the Malian, and tried to bring Diarra to North London in 2006, but the Frenchman could not compete financially with Real Madrid.
It is rumored that Diarra will be available for between £5 million and £10 million.
