American star Landon Donovan is entitled to his opinion, but one criticism you cannot lay at the feet of David Beckham during his career is a lack of effort.

He almost single handedly guided England to the World Cup finals in 2002 with a wonder goal against Greece and some outstanding performances in qualifying.

His record number of appearances for his country as an outfield player is testament to his commitment, but Landon feels that has been lacking during his time with LA Galazy.

President of the US Soccer Federation Sunil Gulati also warned him that the red carpet won’t be rolled out for Becks’ this time after he extended his spell in Italy with AC Milan.

Gulati told Bloomberg: "I'm sure there will be some negative reaction from some fans.

"That's inevitable, but in the end he's a good player, a soccer icon and I think he'll help his team and the league. But are there going to be some people that are upset? Sure."

However, if Beckham does leave the USA then he has proved during his loan spell with Milan that there is plenty of life left in the former Manchester United players' legs – maybe soccer and football really are different ball games!
