Chelsea insist they would be honoured to stage a world heavyweight title fight at Stamford Bridge but denied they had been approached to host David Haye's next fight.

Haye announced his arrival in the heavyweight division with a fifth-round stoppage victory over American Monte Barrett at the 02 Arena in London - and the Bermondsey fighter is being linked to a bout at Stamford Bridge.

A statement from Chelsea read: "Chelsea have not been approached regarding the hosting of a Haye v Klitschko world heavyweight title fight but we would be happy to hold preliminary discussions about the possibility.

"Stamford Bridge is one of the premier venues in London for both sporting and non-sporting events. It would be an honour to stage a global event such as this.

"The ability to host the fight here in the summer of 2009 would be subject to a number of conditions, primarily the protection of the playing surface and approvals with various local agencies and authorities."
