You wonder where it is all going to end

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish says he is being priced out of the transfer market because of players’ demands for sky-high wages.

“The wages Premier League players are getting now is totally beyond the pale. The stories you are hearing about players joining the bigger clubs, the wages - astronomical sums, incredible.

“You kind of wonder if football can sustain it. I suppose if the revenues keep coming in from satellite television it can be sustained, but you wonder where it is all going to end.”

McLeish, whose Birmingham side have signed defenders Scott Dann and Roger Johnson from Championship clubs, added: “I have been looking for a centre half, for instance, and we had Premier League players on our list.

“It was important for me to get defenders with English experience, but having enquired about five central defenders in the Premier League it was absolutely out of the question that we could go for these players.”
