Bolton boss Owen Coyle will give midfielder Gavin McCann the chance to earn a new contract once he is fit.
The 32-year-old's season has been blighted by injury and he has not played since January because of a long-standing ankle problem. McCann, who joined the Trotters from Aston Villa in 2007, is the only player out of contract this summer, which could frustrate Coyle's plans to overhaul his squad.
Coyle told the Bolton News: "I have spoken to Gavin and said because of the nature of that injury I am not in the position to offer him a new contract.
"What I will do, and in fairness to him he's been a very good player and a great lad, is when he is fit I'll give him an opportunity, it might be a month, to go and earn one."
He added: "We're not in an ideal position because I've only got one player out of contract and there will be some players surplus to requirements. I want my own type of players in and add my own flavour."
