Newcastle manager-in-waiting Alan Shearer is reported to be trying to persuade his former England teammate Sol Campbell to join him in his quest to guide the Magpies back into the Premier League.
Shearer, who hopes his appointment as boss at St James’ Park will be rubber-stamped within the next ten days when Mike Ashley’s long-drawn out £100 million sale of the club finally goes though, wants 34-year-old
Campbell to have one last career challenge on Tyneside.
But free agent Campbell, who came close to signing for
Newcastle before opting to join
Portsmouth in 2006, is not being rushed into a decision.
“There are a few options out there. I’m out of contract and am going to listen to offers,” he said.
“I’m aware of the interest from other clubs and it’s nice to know. I want to make the right choice. People are getting back from their holidays and hopefully a deal will start moving.”
While there is still much uncertainly surrounding developments at Newcastle, the same applies to Campbell’s former club Pompey, with caretaker boss Paul Hart set to take charge of pre-season training before a permanent decision on the next manager is made by the new Al Fahim regime.
