Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher believes fellow Anfield favourite Steven Gerrard is the obvious choice as England captain.

The former England defender thinks the man who captain’s Kenny Dalglish’s team has all the necessary traits that are required to do the job.

The case for who should wear the three lions armband was opened after the FA stripped Chelsea’s John Terry of the responsibility last week in light of the court case hanging over his head and Carragher felt they needn’t look further.

“Steven Gerrard is the stand-out captain, and that's not a biased verdict,” Carragher is quoted as saying on the official Liverpool website.

The 34-year-old was keen on stressing the experience Gerrard has of playing a captain’s role and the prestigious way he has done so for Liverpool for a number of years.

“He's been the captain of Liverpool for probably a decade. He's captained in Champions League finals, Europe, big Premier League games,” he added.

“He's also captained England in the last World Cup and he's one of England's best players. For me, I don't think there's a debate.”

Gerrard is just one of the candidates being mentioned as possible successors to Terry, but he is maybe the name on most people’s list

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Scott Parker is another who has been hotly tipped as the man who should lead the England side at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.

However, Carragher is not interested in any other candidates and is adamant his team-mate deserves to be the main man under the next national team manager.

“It should be Steven Gerrard without a shadow of a doubt.”
