Sunderland boss Steve Bruce showed that persistence does pay off after he finally signed Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole for a fee of £6 million yesterday.

The Black Cats’ manager had two previous bids rejected by his former club Wigan for the England U-21 international, but a third offer was eventually accepted by Latics’ chairman Dave Whelan.

Cattermole has passed a medical and agreed a four-year deal to be reunited with Bruce, who took him to Wigan from Middlesbrough in a £3.5 million transfer just 12 months ago.

Cattermole said, “I am a happy man. My year with Steve Bruce was brilliant and when I got the chance to play for him again I just couldn’t turn it down.

“Looking at the players we have got here at Sunderland, we should be aiming to finish in the top 10.”
