Fabio Capello is being linked with a shock appointment at Chelsea, according to reports in the British media.

A source close to the Blues told The Sun newspaper that there are 'strong rumours' over the Italian's possible appointment at Stamford Bridge, and intimated that a move to replace Andre Villas-Boas at the helm could take place sooner than most would expect.

"There are strong rumours that Capello is coming and it could be sooner rather than later," said the source.

Villas-Boas is under intense pressure in west London, with the Blues facing a fight with Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United for the fourth and final Champions League spot in the English Premier League.

Owner Roman Abramovich has made several high-profile appearances at the club's Cobham training ground over the past week as well, adding further fuel to the fire over the former Porto manager's long-term future at the club.

As for Capello, he's endured a difficult week to say the least, having resigned from his post as England manager after the FA stripped John Terry of the captaincy without his consent.

Were the Italian to take over at the King's Road, he'd be working with a strong England contingent, with Terry, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge all within the Blues' ranks.
