Chelsea are not using Daniel Sturridge properly and will only get the best out of him if he is playing through the middle, according to his Dad.

Michael Sturridge believes the Stamford Bridge club are failing to get the most out his son by persisting with him on the wing, as they have done since he arrived from Manchester City.

Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas has previously stated that he does not consider the England international as a centre-forward, something which Sturridge senior believes is stifling his potential.

"He can actually show you a lot more,” said Michael in an interview with The Voice newspaper.

“I think with the experience [he gains] and playing regularly in the Premiership, you are going to see a better player because he will get stronger.

“When he plays in his natural position, which is a central striker, you will see maybe two or three times as much of the player that you now see playing on the wings at the moment.”

Despite Sturridge’s protestations, he has been performing particularly well out on the Chelsea right and has already found the net on ten occasions so far this season.

It has been a breakthrough year for the City youth system graduate, taking in a first senior England cap and securing a regular place in the Chelsea starting XI.

The 22-year-old has been tipped as a player with a bright future in the English game, but his father believes this will only happen if he moves into the position in which he is most comfortable.

“Once he is in that position, I expect you will see a major improvement,” added Michael.

“In terms of potential, we have to see him play in that position to see how far he can go in the game.”
