According to The News of the World, Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson is hoping to make an audacious move for Micah Richards from local rivals Manchester City.

Richards, 21, has only started eight Premier League games for City this term under Manager Mark Hughes. The England defender has fallen out of the first-team frame at Eastland’s this season; since the summer arrivals of Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott, and Pablo Zableta.

Although City boss Mark Hughes recently declared that the 21-year-old is part of his long-term plans, it is now claimed that a shock switch to Old Trafford could be on the cards.

With Gary Neville nearing retirement and Wes Brown struggling for consistency, Fergie is reportedly eager to secure a new option for the right side of his defence.

Richards may feel reluctant to join Arch rivals United, which will surely not go down too well with City fans, however the lure of Champions League football and potentially improved wages may be too enticing for Richards to refuse.
