Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann may be offered the chance to prolong his career for another season with an offer from former club Schalke reports the Independent.
The 41-year-old German stopper came out of retirement at the back end of last season, and could now continue playing for a further twelve months.
Answering a call from Gunners boss Arsene Wenger amidst an apparent goalkeeping crisis, Lehmann returned to the Emirates Stadium after a two-year absence to don the Arsenal colours once again.
With the move seemingly only a short-term manoeuvre, Lehmann's hopes of extending his playing career will likely be better served by a move away from Arsenal.
That has paved the way for Schalke to approach Lehmann about the possibility of returning to the Bundesliga to provide additional cover for the departed Manuel Neuer – who has agreed a summer move to Bayern Munich.
Schalke have already signed Ralf Faehrmann from Eintracht Frankfurt, but general manager Horst Heldt confirmed the club are looking to sign another goalkeeper, and have the Gunners' stalwart in their sights.
"We always said that we want to hire a second goalkeeper if Manuel Neuer leaves. There are various scenarios and Jens Lehmann is a part of it."
At 22, recent arrival Faehrmann spoke of his excitement at the thought of linking up with the current Arsenal stopper:
"I can learn a lot every day from Jens Lehmann," he added.
