England full back Gary Neville is backing his new Manchester United team-mate Michael Owen to regain his place in the national squad now he has moved to Old Trafford.
Owen, 29, has won 89 caps for England and his 40 goals at international level leaves his just nine behind all-time record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton – although the former
Liverpool, Real Madrid and
Newcastle striker has featured only once under current England coach Fabio Capello.
Like Owen,
Neville is also battling to become a regular in the England squad in the build-up to next summer’s World Cup finals, and he said: “It is difficult for me to predict whether a player is going to get picked for a tournament next year, that will be up to the manager.
“But anybody who plays for
United over a season has a great chance of getting into an international team. It is a hard club to play for but if you are playing well and doing well you have a great chance.”
Neville, who himself has won an impressive 85 caps at international level, added: “Michael is in the same position as everyone else who plays for United. The opportunity is certainly there for him.”
Fraizer Campbell
Meanwhile, United have agreed a fee of £5 million with
Sunderland for striker
Fraizer Campbell. The Huddersfield-born 21-year-old was also wanted by
Hull, but it appears the Black Cats have won the race to capture the England Under 21 international.
Campbell enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Hull two years ago, scoring 15 goals to help the Tigers win promotion to the Premier League.
He spent last season on loan at
Tottenham, having been part of the deal that took
Dimitar Berbatov to United, although his opportunities were limited following the arrivals of
Robbie Keane and
Jermain Defoe.
