Another Chelsea player impressed, capping a fine performance with a goal. Michael Essien stood out, as Ghana secured their passage to the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Sudan.Despite scoring twice, Chelsea hit-man Didier Drogba only makes the bench. Nothing to take away from Drogba, but Ivory Coast’s 5-0 win over lowly opponents Burkino Faso means his efforts don’t get him in our team of the week XI. Arsenal’s Emmanuel Eboue was impressive in the game, contributing both in attack and defence. Kolo Toure was also involved in the qualifier and makes the bench.His Manchester City Shay Given had a typically outstanding display for the Republic of Ireland. The agile keeper was in fine form in the 2-1 win over Cyprus in Nikosia. Former club teammate Richard Dunne also makes the side.Robbie Keane makes the bench with his crucial 83rd minute strike to secure victory for the Republic and improve their prospects of making the World Cup finals.His Tottenham Hostpur teammate Giovani dos Santos was instrumental in Mexico’s 3-0 qualification win in Costa Rica getting on the score sheet in the process.Jonny Evans impressed in an unorthodox left back position in Northern Ireland’s group 3 1-1 draw in Poland.His Manchester United colleague Darren Fletcher had a typical battling display in the heart of midfield. Scotland won 2-0 at home against FYR Macedonia. James Mcfadden and Craig Gordon were also superb in the crucial result with Mcfadden bagging the winner.Gordon’s Sunderland teammate Paulo da Silva had a commanding display in defence for Paraguay in their vital 1-0 win against Bolivia.Fulham’s Seol Ki-Hyeon got the winner for South Korea in their 3-2 qualification victory over Australia. Another Cottager, Clint Demspey scored for the USA on their path to South Africa, against El Salvador, winning 2-1.Stoke City’s new signing Tuncay Sanli bagged a stunning brace in Turkey’s group 5 4-2 win versus Estonia.
