Jermain Defoe has revealed the secret behind his five-goal wonder show against Wigan – it was because he wasn’t allowed to go green!

His boot sponsors adidas had given him a new pair of green boots which didn’t go down too well with Spurs’ development coach Clive Allen.

The former Tottenham and England striker told Defoe to change, and he reverted to a ‘pinkish-silver’ number, and he duly went on the rampage.

After the amazing 9-1 win over Wigan, Defoe said: “I had a funny feeling before the game. Adidas gave me a pair of green boots and I tried them on before the game, but Clive Allen said I couldn't wear them, so I changed them.

"They were pinkish silver ones in the end, and I go and score five."

Harry Redknapp has now challenged Defoe to carry on the scoring spree and claim a 20-goal haul for the season for the first time in his career. And cement his place in England’s World Cup squad.

"I don't see why Defoe can't be the top scorer in the Premier League this season," the Spurs boss said. "It's about time he scored 20 goals in a season. I don't know whether he's done it before, maybe with West Ham, but he should be able to do that.

"He's been so sharp in training. You could see this coming. He is the best finisher in the country when he plays like that. When he concentrates and plays his football, he can be unstoppable."
