Wigan manager Paul Jewell took the positives out of seeing his fringe players get a run-out despite the Latics slipping to a 2-0 Carling Cup defeat against League One Crewe.

Tomasz Cywka, an 18-year-old Poland Under-21 midfielder made his debut, while goalkeeper Mike Pollitt and defenders Matt Jackson and David Wright also saw their first action of the campaign.

Jewell, who made Leighton Baines skipper for the night, said: "Tomasz is a young player and he needs a lot of work. He likes to go forward, he´s got to learn the other part of the game. It was Jacko´s first game, David Wright´s first game and Polly´s first game. These lads haven´t had a competitive game for a long, long time."
