Salomon Kalou grabbed a vital away goal for Chelsea as former boss Jose Mourinho and his Inter side enjoyed a 2-1 Champions League first-leg victory in the San Siro.
Chelsea were also rocked by the loss of goalkeeper Petr Cech who was carried off on a stretcher in the second half with a knee injury.
Inter had stunned Carlo Ancelotti's side in the third minute when Diego Milito put them ahead. Kalou levelled with a curling shot in the 51st minute but Esteban Cambiasso restored Inter's advantage when he drilled the ball home four minutes later.
