Liverpool fear their talismanic skipper Steven Gerrard may require surgery to solve his troublesome groin problem.

The 29-year-old will be absent for Liverpool once again at Fulham tomorrow as he struggles to recover from the injury he sustained in England’s World Cup defeat against Ukraine almost three weeks ago.

Gerrard has managed only 25 minutes of competitive action since then – in last week’s Champions League loss to Lyon at Anfield, before limping off after aggravating the problem.

The Reds are currently frustrated by Gerrard’s slow recovery but they are also reluctant to opt for surgery – although an operation may be required if the injury fails to respond to treatment.

Manager Rafa Benitez was hoping Gerrard would be fit for tomorrow’s tricky-looking trip to Craven Cottage, but has now accepted defeat.

Top goalscorer Fernando Torres is still recovering from a similar injury and Benitez said: “Both have to keep going. Gerrard is still working with the physio so we will see. Hopefully Torres will be okay, but for Gerrard maybe it is more difficult.”
