Liverpool have reportedly failed in a last ditch attempt to sign Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

After having bids for Fulham hitman Bobby Zamora and Germany ace Mario Gomez rebuffed earlier in the day, talkSPORT suggests that the Anfield club turned their attentions to Pavlyuchenko.

Reds boss Roy Hodgson had been desperately trying to add another goalscorer to his ranks prior to the transfer window closing in order to take the burden away from Fernando Torres.

It has been a frustrating day in the transfer market for the 63-year-old, who also looks to have missed out on West Ham centre-forward Carlton Cole and, despite Hodgson's alleged interest in Pavlyuchenko, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp had no intention of letting any of his strikers leave White Hart Lane.

Redknapp has been equally as keen to bolster his squad as the Londoners embark on their maiden Champions League campaign, and Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has been linked with surprise late move to the club.
