Liverpool legend John Barnes believes Rafa Benitez is still the man to take Liverpool forward – and is backing his old club to make a better fist of the second half of the season.

Barnes, like everyone with a Liverpool connection, was bitterly disappointed to see the Champions League dream go up in smoke, but he says: “There is still so much to play for.”

The former England international added: “There is still the Europe Cup and the FA Cup, and you hope they can go on and do well in those, but the Premier League is still not out of reach.

“We have seen already that the top teams have been dropping points and I am sure that will continue to be the case.

“The problem for Liverpool is that because they are some way behind the others, they cannot afford to drop too many more points.

“To win the league requires consistency and that is something that Liverpool haven’t had, but they are not out of it.

“I believe that Rafa’s future is at Liverpool and there’s no reason to change the manager at this stage.”
