Liverpool are planning a double raid on Premier League rivals Aston Villa as they want to sign Luke Young and Stiliyan Petrov.

It was confirmed yesterday that the Reds had made an offer for Luke Young, which is now in jeopardy as the right-back looks for a pay out from the Villains.

Now boss Roy Hodgson is hoping to replace Inter Milan-bound Javier Mascherano with Bulgarian Petrov.

The former Fulham manager wants a proven Premier League player to line up alongside Lucas Leiva and Petrov is the man, according to the Mirror.

Mascherano is likely to be sold for around £25 million, giving Hodgson the funds to bring in more players, including a left-back as a top priority.

Liverpool have already brought Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic to Anfield on free transfers while centre-back Danny Wilson has joined from Rangers for an initial £2 million.
