Rafa Benitez is reported to be lining up a shock move for French star and former Premier League favourite Patrick Vieira.

The former Arsenal midfielder is struggling to hold down a place in the Inter Milan first team, which led to the rangy veteran being subsequently dropped for the controversial World Cup play-offs against the Republic of Ireland.

A move is seen as the last option in a bid to reignite his international career, and Vieira is desperate to earn a seat on the plane to South Africa with Raymond Domenech's French side.

Spurs were one of a number of clubs who were strongly linked with the player in the summer, and are once again being linked with the midfield star.

It is Liverpool who are believed to be in poll position however, with reports in Italy linking the Reds with a move for the 33-year-old in January.

With midfield injury woes adding to the growing list of problems at Anfield, Benitez would be looking to bring the former Juventus man in on a fairly short-term basis, with the possibility of a loan not out of the question.
