Liverpool are being linked with a move for Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan.

The Rennes striker impressed for his country during the recent World Cup in South Africa, and new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has reportedly taken an interest in the 24-year-old.

Gyan was the African star in an otherwise poor tournament for the host continent. The striker scored three times on the way to a quarter-final place, although misses a crucial penalty with the last kick of the clash with Uruguay.

After starting his career at homeland club Liberty Professionals, Udinese signed the then teenager and proceeded to loan him out to Serie 'B' side Modena.

Life at the Zebrette never took off for Gyan, and in 2008 the forward signed for his current Ligue 1 club on a four-year deal. It cost the French side €8 million.

His form at the Stade de la Route de Lorient has never matched that on the international stage, where Gyan has scored 22 times in 43 appearances.

An inflated £20 million price tag, due to performances in South Africa, could be a major stumbling block in any possible deal.

A handful of Premier League clubs are said to be interested in the Black Stars striker, although the News of the World reports that the Reds are one of the leading contenders for Gyan's signature.
