Sam Allardyce is hoping his close friend Steve Bruce is successful in his attempts to sign a couple of new strikers at Sunderland, as it could enable the Blackburn boss to prise Kenwyne Jones away from the Stadium of Light.
Rovers have made no secret of their desire to bolster their attack following the sale of
Roque Santa Cruz to
Manchester City for £18 million, although ‘Big Sam’ admitted an audacious bid to sign Real Madrid’s Ruud van Nistelrooy now seems highly unlikely due the Dutchman’s wage demands.
But Allardyce is keeping tabs on Bruce’s efforts to capture England pair
Darren Bent and
Peter Crouch, and if he is successful it may result in Rovers lining up a £10 million bid for
Jones.
Christian Vieri
Meanwhile, Allardyce has hailed former Italian international striker, and one-time the most expensive player in the world, Christian Vieri for being willing to battle for a deal with the club.
The 35-year-old has joined up with the Blackburn squad on their pre-season camp in Austria as he looks to resurrect his career after playing less than 50 games in the last four years in Italy.
“Joining us shows a certain amount of commitment from him. He is out of condition compared to the rest of the lads, but he wants to play at the top level,” said Allardyce.
“Christian is a terrific player, a great talent and if he still has the self motivation and dedication then fine. Obviously it’s a bit of a long shot but there is no harm in looking at a top quality player like him.”
