It has been a great season so far for both Luke Young and Charlton. The full back has made his full England debut in a competitive fixture and helped the Addicks reach second place in the Premiership. Four consecutive away wins has played a big part in their success and they produced a scintillating first half performance to beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at The Hawthorns on Saturday. Young has got a big fortnight ahead, as Charlton face his old club Tottenham next weekend and then he will link up with the England squad for their crucial fixtures against Austria and Poland. And, as he told givemefootball's Ian Clarkson, he could well be joined on international duty by his in-form teammate Danny Murphy.
Q:DANNY MURPHY HAS BEEN IN GREAT FORM THIS SEASON HASN'T HE?
A:He has probably been our best player in most of the games this season. He has come back and looked really sharp, he has lost a little bit of weight from the start of last season when he came back a little bit heavy. He is creating things for us and is really playing well. When he first came to us he hadn't had much of a pre-season and his head was all over the place about the move and he struggled at first. But this year he is up to the fitness he should be and it is paying dividends because he is winning games for us.
Q:DO YOU THINK HE CAN JOIN YOU BACK IN THE ENGLAND SQUAD?
A:On the form he is showing at the moment there is no reason why he can't be in that England squad. I think deep down he is starting to think that himself too. But he is just concentrating on what he is doing on the pitch and if he keeps doing that then I am sure it will happen for him. Danny knows it is going to be very difficult for him to break into the starting XI but there is no reason why he can't be knocking on the door for the squad. It would be good for the profile of the club because Darren Bent and myself are there and it is nice to see some of our lads in the England squad. The more the merrier.
Q:YOU HAVE GOT A BIG SQUAD AT CHARLTON THESE DAYS HAVEN'T YOU?
A:We took 20 players to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and we have some quality players who are not even on the bench. It is not like they are young lads, they are seasoned professionals and everybody out there in the starting XI knows they have to perform otherwise there is someone ready to come in and replace them. The gaffer wanted the strength in depth but it is difficult for him to keep everyone happy.
Q:WHAT WAS YOUR VERDICT ON THE TEAM PERFORMANCE AT ALBION?
A:I think we played some great stuff in the first half for 30 minutes and then we contributed to Albion's comeback because we started giving the ball away too easily and inviting pressure. They came out second half and really gave us a tough game but we dug in and nicked the points.
Q:YOU HAD TO DIG IN DEEP, DIDN'T YOU?
A:The match was similar to our win at Birmingham and it was the second time when we have shown character in the second half. Our play wasn't up to scratch but we have shown our other qualities where we have dug in and put our head on every ball. At the end there were people throwing themselves at the ball to try and win the three points.
Q:CONFIDENCE MUST BE SKY HIGH AT PRESENT?
A:When you keep winning, you go into games thinking you can take all three points whereas perhaps, in the past, we would have been happy with a point. It is early days but we are really pleased with the start we have made and we just hope it can continue. You need a good start and we have had that, so it is down to us now to continue the run and dig in. We'll see where we are around Christmas and then try and push on.
