Roberto Martinez has told Chris Kirkland he must wait before he will discuss a new contract for the stopper.

On Wednesday, Kirkland told the Daily Mirror that now he has returned from Doncaster Rovers, where he was out on loan, he would like to regain his first team place at Wigan and sign a new deal.

But the injury prone goalkeeper may struggle to persuade Martinez to renew his current deal, which runs out at the end of the season. Especially as his spell at Doncaster lasted one match having been prematurely ended by a back injury.

Martinez wants the team to find form, and the player some fitness, before he deals with any contract negotiations.

"Chris is back from Doncaster at the moment and we need to get him fully fit and make sure in this period we concentrate on the run of the team," said Martinez.

"We're in a negative run of results and we need to change that, and all the personal situations are going to be dealt with accordingly over the next few months."

Meanwhile, Hugo Rodallega is renegotiating his contract with the Latics.

Martinez has acknowledged the Colombian's importance to the side, but knows he must be patient as the player looks for improvement at the DW Stadium.

"He (Rodallega) has a massive role (to play at Wigan). He wants to see Wigan winning the next football game and we need his type of characters here," said Martinez.

"But it is something (signing a new contract) that will take some time. There are certain logistics of his situation. He has a Colombian agent and that takes a bit of time," added the Spaniard.
