Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Gavin McCann has taken up a role in Owen Coyle's coaching staff following his recent retirement.
The 33-year-old Trotter, was forced to hang up his boots prematurely after losing an 18-month battle with an ankle injury.
"I first picked up the injury against Wolves back in 2009 and it's never been right since.
"Just after the gaffer took over I realised I needed an operation in the aim of trying to get things sorted once and for all.
"I had the surgery and aimed to get back to fitness for the start of pre-season last summer.
"I was still struggling, though, and after speaking to the surgeon it was decided that I should call it a day."
McCann, who has also played for Aston Villa, Sunderland and Everton has successfully completed his UEFA Level Three coaching badge, and will now become an assistant coach with Wanderers' Academy.
"I mentioned to Jimmy Phillips, who heads up the Academy, that I would like to get involved with coaching the kids and he was really helpful," he continued.
"My next target is to complete my UEFA ‘A’ Licence and see where it takes me."
