Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has made five new signings in preparation for the club’s return to the Premier League, but not one of his captures is an established top flight player.

The closest is goalkeeper Joe Hart, who has arrived at St Andrews on a season-long loan deal, but he spent much of last season as back-up to Shay Given at Manchester City.

McLeish has signed Ecuador striker Christian Benitez for £9.2 million and his countryman Giovanny Espinoza for £3.5 million, but he admits he has yet to see the pair play.

“I’ve always tried to see players play personally but that gets more difficult. Having not seen Benitez or Espinoza in the flesh there will be an element of ‘you’re not sure’ but there’s no doubting their credentials,” said McLeish.

“Espinoza has 80 caps, Benitez is the new kid on the block, a thorn in the side of South American teams, the Argentineans, the Brazilians.

“There is fantastic potential there and players like that don’t come cheap. Hopefully Benitez can cause English defences the same kind of problems he caused the South Americans.”
