Sunderland striker David Healy believes he still has a future at the Stadium of Light and is determined to put a couple of frustrating seasons at club level behind him.
Healy continues to score at a prolific rate for Northern Ireland, indeed he is their record goalscorer with 35, but last term he netted only three times in 14 appearances for the
Black Cats. In the preceding campaign he scored just four goals in 30 Premier League games for
Fulham.
New Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is being linked with a number of strikers, including
Tottenham’s Darren Bent,
Peter Crouch of
Portsmouth and
Reading’s Kevin Doyle, but Healy is hoping the former
Wigan manager is true to his word and will give everyone at the club the chance to prove their worth.
But, with an ambitious new manager in charge and funds in the transfer kitty, Healy admits it is down to him to lay down a marker when the squad return for pre-season training next month.
“I’ve got a couple of years left on my contract and I feel as if I haven’t done myself justice,” said the former
Leeds and
Preston player.
“I had a frustrating season, not playing as many games as I would have liked, but I plan to do all I can to change that when pre-season starts.
“But hopefully next year, with a new manager and a new set of players, I can have a little but of a lift and get off to a good start next season.”
The 29-year-old added: “Steve Bruce is an inspirational manager and hopefully he can get the best out of the players we have. There had been a lot of names banded about but I am glad that a British-style manager was given the nod.
“We don’t want another season like last season. Hopefully we have got enough to challenge for a top ten place maybe.”
Under the ownership of businessman Ellis Short, Bruce should have a substantial transfer budget to draw from and Healy continued: “It is an exciting time for the club and I want to be part of it.”
