Manchester United fans have been assured that the club’s American owners will be giving manager Sir Alex Ferguson significant funds to sign new recruits.

United have already lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez this summer, while they appear to have missed out on a number of transfer targets this summer, including Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery.

United have added Antonio Valencia and Michael Owen to their squad in the last few days – and more new signings are expected.

A spokesman for the Florida-based Glazier family, who own the club, said: “When it comes to transfer policy at Manchester United, the situation is the same now as it has been since the owners came to the club.

“Sir Alex Ferguson identifies the players he wants at the club and he is then given 100 per cent backing in the transfer market.

“Any suggestion that Ronaldo was sold by the owners, or that he was sold to help with the debt, is wrong.”
