1916
Evelyn Lintott, Players’ Union Chairman in 1910, dies on the Somme. A left back with a fine passing range, Evelyn went to Guilford Grammar School and later qualified as a teacher at Exeter Training College. While playing for
Queen’s Park Rangers, he taught in a school in Willesden.
In 1908 he won an England amateur cap versus Ireland and went on to win seven full England caps. At the start of the war Evelyn joined the 15th Battn. West Yorks (The ‘Leeds Pals’) and was the first professional footballer to hold a commission. A letter to the Yorkshire Post describes his last moments.
"Lt. Lintott’s end was particularly gallant. He led his men with great dash and when hit the first time declined to take the count. Instead he drew his revolver and called for further effort, again he was hit but struggled on but a third shot finally bowled him over."
1978
The FA appeal against a court ruling that 12-year-old Theresa Bennett be allowed to play in a boy’s football team.
1982
Northern Ireland draw 2-2 with Austria in the World Cup in Spain thanks to two goals from Billy Hamilton. They must now beat France to reach the semi-finals.
