Northern Ireland’s Billy Gillespie, long-time holder of a 13-goal national scoring record, dies in Kent. Sheffield United signed Billy from Leeds City in December 1912 for £500 and the maximum wage of £4 per week. Billy became team captain between 1923 and 1930, leading United to an FA Cup triumph in 1925.

Over a 20-year period from 1913 to 1932, he scored over 137 League and Cup goals in 492 games for the ‘Blades’ and was held in such high regard when he left in 1932 to become player-manager of Derry City that the Irish side changed their strip to red and white stripes in reverence to him and his old club!

Billy had fine record in internationals against the English with seven of his 13 goals being scored against the ‘old enemy’. He died just a month short of his 90th birthday in July 1981. His Irish scoring record stood for an amazing 78 years until David Healy struck his 14th international goal in Northern Ireland’s 2004 summer tour of the Caribbean.

1982

Diego Maradona is sent off as Argentina are defeated 3-1 by Brazil to go out of the World Cup.

1999

Newcastle United put Dietmar Hamann up for sale for £10m having bought him just a year ago for £5.5m from Bayern Munich.

1977

After leading the club to promotion to Division One, Chelsea boss Eddie McCreadie quits after directors refuse to offer him a long-term contract. Days later McCreadie asks to return on the same terms but Chelsea refuse to take him back.

1975

Arsenal’s Charlie George signs for First Division Champions Derby County for £80,000, manager Dave Mackay pipping his old club Spurs for the player.
