Keith Burkenshaw takes over the Bahrain national side on a two-year £250,000 tax-free contract, just a month after leaving
Tottenham Hotspur after a disagreement with the board.
Keith was Spurs’ second most successful manager (after Bill Nicholson). During his reign from July 14, 1976 to May 31, 1984 he led Spurs to promotion and two successive FA Cup Finals, in 1981 and 1982.
In what was considered a brave move at the time, he signed two Argentine World Cup stars, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa in 1978 who, along with Glenn Hoddle, produced some of the most stylish football of the 1980s.
In his final game in charge, Spurs won the UEFA Cup (1984) for a second time after a penalty shoot-out in a second leg at White Hart Lane. On his departure from the club, Keith quipped: “There used to be a football club there.”
