Keith Burkenshaw takes over the Bahrain national side on a two-year £250,000 tax-free contract, just a month after leaving Tottenham Hotspur after a disagreement with the board.

Keith was Spurs’ second most successful manager (after Bill Nicholson). During his reign from July 14, 1976 to May 31, 1984 he led Spurs to promotion and two successive FA Cup Finals, in 1981 and 1982.

In what was considered a brave move at the time, he signed two Argentine World Cup stars, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa in 1978 who, along with Glenn Hoddle, produced some of the most stylish football of the 1980s.

In his final game in charge, Spurs won the UEFA Cup (1984) for a second time after a penalty shoot-out in a second leg at White Hart Lane. On his departure from the club, Keith quipped: “There used to be a football club there.”

1863

Preston North End Double winner John Goodall is born in Westminster.

1985

It is announced that football must find £22m to bring grounds up to scratch at the start of the new season. The burden falling on Third and Fourth Division clubs after the 1975 Safety of Sports Grounds Act, following the Bradford fire, is widened to include them.

1962

Manchester United and Manchester City make offers for two disaffected British players at Italian club Torino: United for Denis Law, City for Joe Baker.

1958

Wales and Ireland go out of the World Cup. Wales without John Charles lose 1-0 to Brazil as Pele scores while France score four against the Irish without response.

1977

Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty reveals that Mary, the wife of United’s physiotherapist Laurie Brown, is living with him. Tommy says: "It’s been happening since Adam and Eve, hasn’t it?"

Manchester United sack him three weeks later.

1969

Terry Venables agrees to move to Queens Park Rangers from Spurs for £80,000. Manager Bill Nicholson says: “Terry has not fitted in here. He has had to take a lot of stick from the crowd and is conscious of the barracking all the time.”
