Michael Owen scores a sensational individual wonder goal in England's second round France 98 World Cup match against Argentina in St. Étienne.
Receiving the ball from
David Beckham just inside the opposition’s half, he beats defenders Roberto Ayala and José Chamot and strikes the ball from just outside the penalty box - a fantastic run capped by an emphatic finish – and all at the tender age of 18.
The goal was voted by many as the goal of the tournament, bringing Michael to the attention of the world football scene. Owen had already won England a penalty, and later converted one of the spot-kicks in the eventual shoot-out that settled the tie 4-3 in Argentina's favour.
