Peter Shilton makes his debut for Stoke City in a 2-2 with Wolverhampton Wanderers after his £340,000 move from Leicester City. Ex-Leicester and England keeper Gordon Banks says: “Already he is a better goalkeeper than I was at his age.

“I have never come across such agility in a tall man before. This man will definitely be better than I was.”

Manager Tony Waddington describes Peter’s debut as ‘out-of-this-world’. However, Stoke would be relegated at the end of the 1976-77 season and, in 1977, Peter was bought by Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest. Peter would later play for Southampton, Derby County, Plymouth Argyle and Bolton Wanderers, finishing at Leyton Orient, where he achieved a record 1,005 League appearances. In July 1990.

1983

Twenty rwo-year-old Jesper Olsen signs for Manchester United from Ajax for £700,000. He says: “I have decided to join them because I think they can win the European Cup.”

1960
