1974

Leicester City call off their £140,000 transfer of Liverpool’s John Toshack because tests reveal he has a muscle injury on his left thigh. Toshack, who had agreed terms, had been named in the Leicester team to face Manchester City, but is now withdrawn.

‘Tosh’ would stay at Liverpool until 1978, during which time he would add two League Championship medals and a UEFA Cup medal to his collection whilst bringing his total of goals for the club to 96.

However, injuries eventually took their toll and he was transferred to Swansea City who he joined as player-manager in 1978.

John is still held in high regard by Liverpool supporters who voted him in at No.34 on the Liverpool Football Club web-site poll of ‘100 Players Who Shook The Kop’.

1951

Charles Wreford Brown, Corinthian and originator of name ‘soccer’, dies. As England captain, he once took to the field with a deep pocket in his shorts filled with gold sovereigns and pressed one of the coins into the hand of each professional goal-scorer after the man had netted!

1987

The Football League votes unanimously to turn down Robert Maxwell’s attempt to take over Watford, although Chairman Elton John expects the publishing mogul to push ahead with his £2m deal.

1983

Liverpool’s Kenny Dalglish scores his 100th League goal in a 1-1 away draw with Ipswich Town. He’s now the first player to score 100 goals for one club in Scotland (Celtic) and one in England (Liverpool).

1966

Millwall set a record of 56 home matches without defeat (and earn an £8 bonus) when they defeat Carlisle United and better Reading’s 30-year record.

1964

Ian Lawther of Scunthorpe United signs for Brentford for £15,000 in a committee room at the House of Commons – first footballer to do so – as Brentford Chairman is Jack Dunnett, Labour MP for Nottingham Central. Ian’s wife Freda says: “What a day! Now we are talking about living in a houseboat on the Thames.”
